Southern Tour: A Hawley Roadtrip {Finale}

For a review, see Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.  I just realized that I started telling y'all about this trip, wrote 5 editions, and forgot to finish up the trip.  Lame!

To refresh your memory, the Mr and I took a HUGE road trip back in June.  We drove from Houston to Baltimore, MD.  Yes, at first I thought we were nuts, but even with both dogs, the 28-hour drive was such a fun vacation.

If you’re interested in the details of the trip, I’ve list the separate posts at the top, but for today, I want to tell you about the purpose of the trip.  (Seriously this is SO lame of me; it has taken me 5 months to blog about this trip and I still haven't told you about the purpose?! Sorry peeps!)

The reason why we took the trip was because one of our great friends from college was getting married & we wouldn’t miss this for the world! When I left off in Part 5, Phil and I were in Georgia.  After that, we drove straight through to Virginia, where my family lives.  We arrived on a Wednesday and stayed until Friday morning.
When we were in VA we got to visit with my family.  Since we wont get to see them this year for Christmas we spent a few extra days there.  We went to see my sister at work, and our alma mater. DSC_0416-2

I also rode this tricycle into a mailbox around my mom’s neighborhood.DSC_0433-2

On Friday we left and drove the rest of the way to north Baltimore.  We left the dogs with my dad and they absolutely loved my dad’s back yard, the extra snuggles from my dad and sister, and Phil & I enjoyed a few days to ourselves! A win-win situation if you ask me!
 Something Phil and I love to do on road trips is to stop at places that have been featured on the Food Network or Travel Channel.  On this trip we stopped at a place in every state.  In Virginia we went to Buzz and Neds Virginia BBQ, and in MD we went to G&M for the best crab cakes we’ve ever had!  We get one every year at Christmas when we fly home.  Seriously people, THE BEST!Collage 1Collage 2

Since we didn’t have the dogs, Phil booked us a room at The Yellow Turtle Bed & Breakfast (Phil knows my love for turtles! Go Delta Zeta)  So while Phil was doing wedding stuff, I was chilling out at the B&B, taking pictures, and writing… was perfect!

The wedding rehearsal was fabulous and fun!  They had a great beachy theme for the rehearsal and it was perfect.  Phil and the groom played basketball all through high school and into college.  The groom works in marketing for athletic shoes, so it made perfect sense for the groom’s cake to be a giant shoe!  So perfect!Collage 3DSC_0502-2

To echo the cake, the groom gave each of the groomsmen a pair of custom made basketball shoes to wear during the wedding.  It was awesome to see all of these tall guys up at the alter in their tuxedos and blue and black shoes!Collage 4DSC_0649-2

The wedding was beautiful and I am so glad that we made it back to witness the union of our dear friends!  Congratulations B & K; we are so thrilled for you!

“The Lord bless you, and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you, and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you, and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26

After the wedding, like immediately after the wedding, around 10pm on Saturday night, we drove back to VA.  We slept from 3am-6am on Sunday, and started our drive back to Houston.  We got back around noon on Monday.  It was an awesome trip, and although I said when I moved to Houston 5 years ago that I would never make the trip again, I have to say that I was so wrong.  Never say “never” right?

I love going on road trips with my family and I can certainly see myself doing this again.  What was the last road trip you went on?  Where would you suggest the Hawleys go on their next road trip?
xoxo Darby

Aww...I love road trips. This is one of the things I miss the most about not living in the US right now.

I'm sure you've already done trips around Texas - that's a must since you live in Houston.

Also, love the drive from Denver through New Mexico to El Paso. That's probably my favorite.

I'm from El Paso I think any drive from El Paso..North or El Paso...West (California) is incredible.

Your food pictures look great! Love that you guys stop off at FoodTV spots!

The next road trip is to Alabama to meet Baby Sowell!!! And I especially love that y'all took the babies on this trip. The only way to train them is to have them with you. MB loves to travel... she even knows the way to and from our new home in Alabama. =) Smart pups we have!

Y'all seriously are nuts for going on this huge trip! But it does sound like you packed in so many fun things that helped break up the trip. Stopping at restaurants that you've heard about on Food Network is SUCH a good idea! I may have to steal it :) And can I just say how beautiful you are?! I loved you in your green dress for the rehearsal dinner!!
